UK Pension Access Age After Moving to India: 55 Now, 57 From 2028

The UK normal minimum pension age is generally 55 today and is scheduled to rise to 57 from 6 April 2028. Protected pension ages and ill-health rules can create exceptions. Moving a pension to a QROPS does not mean UK tax restrictions on early or unauthorised payments can simply be ignored.

Old content often says ‘minimum age 55’ as if that rule is permanent. It is not. HMRC has confirmed the scheduled increase to 57 from 6 April 2028, subject to transitional/protected-age rules.

QROPS can remain within UK member-payment tax rules for a period after transfer. Clients should therefore verify permitted benefit access with the receiving scheme and obtain tax advice before taking an early payment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw at 55 in 2029?

Not necessarily. The general normal minimum pension age is scheduled to be 57 from 6 April 2028, unless an exception/protection applies.

Does moving to India remove the UK pension age rules?

No.

What is protected pension age?

Certain members can retain an earlier pension age where statutory conditions are met; it is scheme/member specific.
